OUR HISTORY

In 1960, several women in the City of Halifax decided an association of insurance women should be formed. The inaugural meeting was held on April 11, 1960, with meetings being held in Halifax. The “founding” members included Gladys Venturini, Gert Peters, Marg Gillies, Joan Marsh, Gertrude Pyke, Margaret Miller, Noreen Lawlor, Allie Ahearn, Kathy Harrington and Ernie Lee.

The purpose of the Nova Scotia Insurance Women’s Association (NSIWA) is to encourage and foster educational programs designed to broaden the knowledge of its members and to encourage people, coming into the industry, to take advantage of the programs offered and make them more responsive to the requirements of their employers. At regular monthly meetings, there are guest speakers who discuss various subjects related to the insurance industry.

Among many other events sponsored by the NSIWA are the Public Speaking Contest and the Essay Contest. Our Association is very actively involved with the Nation-wide Insurance Information Week, which is held each October.

Through our Association education, professional development and networking are stressed.

NSIWA strongly encourages its members to take courses offered by the Insurance Institute of Nova Scotia/Canada and to take part in other educational programs. A yearly Tri-Conference is held where the associations from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick take part in a seminar/conference weekend hosted by one of the associations.

Through our affiliation with the Canadian Association of Insurance Women, we have the opportunity of networking with insurance women across Canada and are able to share educational programs for the betterment of insurance women as a whole.

Our meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month from September to May.
